About the venue
The Charterhouse is a very special location in Clerkenwell and offers an enchanting setting for your wedding or civil partnership. Both a captivating heritage site and a vibrant contemporary community, it features both Grade I and Grade II listed buildings and beautiful gardens that are at their best in late Spring and Summer. With origins dating back to the 14th century, the Charterhouse has been a Carthusian monastery, a grand Tudor mansion and later an almshouse and school. Today we are a housing charity, and our residents are at the heart of our community.
Previously hidden for nearly 650 years behind high walls until opening in 2017, the Charterhouse still retains a ‘hidden gem’ feeling and provides a wonderful opportunity to weave your story into ours. You can choose to hold your ceremony or reception in a stunning medieval cloister where Carthusian monks once walked, a grand Tudor reception hall, or in the last surviving Tudor Great Chamber in London where Elizabeth I prepared for her coronation. Perhaps you would prefer a blessing in our Jacobean Chapel with a reception in flower-filled garden. Our highly experienced team will work with you to deliver your perfect day for you and your guests to enjoy and remember long after, for all the right reasons!
We are located close to Farringdon and Barbican Tubes for easy access and are an accessible and wheelchair-friendly venue. By hosting your ceremony at the Charterhouse you are also helping us to share in your celebrations through supporting our housing charity.
